Gemstone Identifcation Report can say a lot on how much the owner can resell his or her stones later. However, there are so many of these laboratories around the world which can report the exact same stone with different words, or same words but mean differently to different nationality.

Hence, it is worth to have basis knowledge and background of the gemstones. This includes the gemstones origin, the gemstone treatment and the major market of these gemstones.

The gemstone origin is usually exempted from the indentification report due to the limited ability in identifying. However , the description identification can give a rough idea of where the origin might be. And this is in fact where the trade names come from. For instant, 'Kashimr' blue refers to velvety, slightly violetish blue ,' Cornflower' blue describes the finest quality of blue sapphires, or ' Burmese ruby' refers to red to slightly purplish red in medium dark tone and vivid saturation origniated from Myanmar( Burma)  while ' Pigeon's blood' describes the vivid saturation red color of finest ruby.

The most essentail for the report is the gemstone treatments. Through time, different gemstone enhancement methods or treatments are discovered, align with the development of expensive laboratories machines and instruments to identify how these stones are being enhanced. And the results shall go into the gemstone report. The costly research in developing machines and skills in using them suggest the high fee in turning your stones to identify. The usual issues are that the new version machines for identifying only come later or take longer time  after the new treatments have been discovered. Furthermore, the number of machinery also limted due to the high cost and only known laboratories have these machines. Hence, the identification fees from these laboratories are much higher than small laboratories. The amount of fees and acessibility of the checking the stones thus affect the trading price and trade market as a whole. In China , a gemstone indentification report can cost as low as 2 Yuan ( 0.30 US$), while in Thailand the generally low fee laboratories will fetch around 200 Bht ( 5.50 US$). Though it also depends on the type of gemstone and karat weight. Unlike diamond, color-gemstone is not operating cartel nor does it have the rappaport list of suggested trading price. Hence, pricing is very volatile and sensitive to rumours or news on the new treatment. As the new treatment usually lower the price of the stones in general.

Though ICA and other color gemstones trade association try to establish the same standard of  gemstone identification around the world, not all abide by the regulations and also in reality it is not feasible. Also the word " Treatment" can be very sensitive to some people, although in practise , up to 85 %  of blue sapphire gemstone undergo " Heat Treatment". There are different kind of treatments. Some are acceptable in some market but not the others.

Therefore, taking note of countries of trading and the laboratories are worth for traders.
