seeDeciduous trees and shrubs are still dormant enough to transplant this month. Trees that weren't fed last fall should be deep fed by punching a series of 1-2 inch holes, two feet apart around the drop line and filled with the appropriate fertilizer. To feed evergreens, conifers, rhododendrons, azaleas & camellias, use an acid type fertilizer like the type used on rhododendrons. If you use dry fertilizers, be sure to water it in thoroughly.
Prune summer flowering shrubs now, but be aware that spring bloomers have already produced their buds last fall, and pruning them now will result in the loss of flowers. Forsythia, quince, spirea and other early spring flowering shrubs such as lilacs should be pruned after they have finished flowering this year. Always start your pruning by removing dead, decayed or broken branches. Now's a good time to apply your dormant fruit spray. Spraying should be done on a still day with the temperature above 40 degrees F.
Finish pruning fruit trees this month before the buds swell. Late March and early April is a good time to transplant shrubs and trees. As soon as the soil is workable, but before the buds have swollen or broken open, you can move shrubs and trees.
