You'll be guaranteed a great ride if you check a few items before you leave the driveway or parking lot. Learn these simple steps to ensure safety and a great ride!

1. Check the air pressure in each tire. Often, the recommended psi is written on the tire itself. If not, it's worth the time spent to check the manual for the proper specifications. Low air pressure makes you more prone to flats. Carry a spare tube and, if you get a flat, you'll only have to walk to the next gas station.

2. Test your brakes. Make sure your cables are appropriately placed, that they compress easily, and spring back promptly. Stopping whenever your hear a strange pedaling noise while riding will spare damage to your hydraulic disc brakes, if you have them. It's easier to remove the stick or other foreign item than to unexpectedly lose braking power on the ride.

3. Make sure your wheels are securely attached to the bike. The axel should be firmly seated, and the bolts fastened tight. They can become loosened with use, so a regular inspection is important.

4. Eyeball your frame for cracks or gaps than indicate breakage. If you ride off road, this insection can save you life.

5. Make sure you carry a light snack and water for rides longer than an hour, or money to purchase them on the road. Cash is also useful for cab fare, if you fail to properly inspect and suffer a mechanical failure.
