To the best of my knowledge, buying and using duped items in diablo 2 LOD battlenet is a high-risk move for your game playing because of the following reasons.

1/ Blizzard has been continuously putting efforts on the game to maintain the fairness of game playing in the game community.  Removing illegit and duped items is always the first priority in their job list.  The launch of new patch is a good indication of such intention.  Therefore, duped items will eventually be removed (or disappear) from the game after the launch of a new patch.

2/ The perm method of duped items is not 100% safe at all.  Majority of the duped-item sellers has been teaching buyers a perm method for securing duped items to be safely stored and held in buyer's character.  However, people has still been complaining losing those items during and after each of their game playings.  Some of the negative feedbacks in those duped-item sellers' feedback profile are solid evidences of this fact. 

3/ You may ask how to identify whether the item you are buying is duped or not.  It can tell by the quantity and condition of such item and the variety of items such seller is selling.  For example, if the seller are selling massive high runes, perfect jewels, charms and 100% perfect elite unique items at the same time.  It is very likely that such sellers are selling duped items.  Another example is that, if one seller has kept selling over 50% of his or her items in only few categories of items, like focusing on high runes, perfect jewels, or runewords.  You may ask yourself a simple question - how the seller gets so many perfect items in such a short period of time and on such an ongoing basis.  Simply put, too good to be true, right!

4/ Buying duped items means also infringing Blizzard's copyright!  You may get into trouble if Blizzard takes action not only on the sellers but also the users of such duped items!  Frankly speaking, you may already know that, Blizzard has been repeatedly stressed this point in its website AND actually, Blizzard and its agent have already taken appropriate legal actions to warn and stop illegit sellers in ebay since last few years.  Many ebay sellers were banned eventually. 

Therefore, choosing a professional D2 seller who is selling 100% legit items is extremely important.  You should look at the items he or she is selling and most important of all, the percentage of all his or her ebay positive feedbacks.  The higher percentage such seller gets, the more reliable it is.  High percentage sometimes means at least 99% or above.
