In general, decorative ceramics are more valuable than tableware ceramics. Decorative ceramics are items you display like vases, figurines, figures, tiles, bowls and etc. Tableware ceramics are objects we use like plates, saucer, cups, and etc. Buy only ceramic objects that has no damage unless the object has very minor damage and you want to add it in your collection. Only exceptionally rare pieces with damage are forgiven in this rule. If the seller claims that a particular ceramic is made by a well known ceramic maker, designs should be of the highest quality associated to that maker. Look at the gilding, color, painting, image and design. Does it resemble to the maker's other ceramics? It could be a fake if it looks different or poorly made. If you can touch the ceramic, feel the surface and look for any bump, crack or chip that the naked eye cannot see. Tap it gently and listen to it's sound. It should sound like a high pitched "ting". If not, there's probably a crack. Since you cannot touch it if you buy it online, ask the dealer/ seller. Ask for the condition of the ceramic, where it was made, when and who made it. Ask for any marks? You should also be equipped with knowledge about markings in ceramics so you know what you are buying or bidding on. Happy searching!
