A good bath is all important to a good grooming. You cannot groom a dog well if he/she is not clean. Give your dog a bath often. The shampoos available today do not strip oil from a dogs coat, rather they add to the coat. A good bath makes your dog feel better, look better and definitely smell better. Brushing the dog before bathing will remove dead hair, debris, stimulate circulation. If your doggie has mats, use a dematting comb or stripper. Mats can hold shampoo and make it harder to rinse the dog. Dispense shampoo into the coat and work the shampoo through the hair with your hands, adding water as necessary to make a good lather. Do not just wash the top hair! Work the shampoo through the hair to the skin. Be sure to do the entire dog-under the stomach, under the tail, under and between the foot pads and inside the ears. The dogs head is tricky. Do not get shampoo in the eyes. Even though you may be using tearless shampoo, dirt and shampoo can cause infections. If certain areas are extremely dirty, such as the dogs feet or legs, use a small bristle brush to gently scub these areas. A thorough rinsing with warm water is especially important, to ensure that all traces of shampoo are removed from the dogs coat. A hose with a spray attachment works well for this purpose. To dry the dog, place him/her on a towel and use another towel working from the head down to the feet.
