When considering a state of the art digital or digital sports watch of instant recognition, cost performance, and durability, the Casio G-Shock is certainly worthy of your time. The features: anti-shock anti-gravity, dust-proofing, water-proofing, cold/heat-proofing use. Perfect for outdoor explorers, joggers, hikers, scuba divers, fishermen, rock climbers, swimmers, cyclers, geocachers, weekend warriors or all the other army of outdoor wantabees. These are truly watches to go anywhere, measure performance, environmental factors reliably and accurately, with the eye catching appeal of high tech.
Beware of misleading imitation, non-Japanese, G-Shock Style, G Baby, Atomic, etc. watches often listed as new, and under $10, on eBay. Many, if not most, are not Casio!
In marked contrast to these, and most other digital sports watches, the main reason for the malfunction of the G-Shock watch remains: the failure or disinterest of the user to replace weak or expired batteries!
It hasn`t damaged the image too badly also having Tom Cruise`s Ethan Hunt putting a solar-powered MT-G 911 to the test in the most recent Mission Impossible III movie, as well as other popular SF and adventure movies (often with the brand name hidden) as in Men in Black and Star Trek scenes.
What are the features that have evolved most recently in G-Shock? These include: the high tide/ebb tide time display function (tide graph), temperature humidity measurement sensor (thermo- sensor), duplex liquid crystal, electro-luminescent (EL) backlight (black - 2 colors of red, reversible display ), the solar electric battery, flash alert, and lastly, the "atomic radio wave reception" or waveceptor function in 2003. Now, the core of the series, the "solar radio wave" watches in "The-G" series, and included for the first time in the summer of 2005, a cool new vibration flash feature.
The G-Shock PVC resin also continues to evolve and improve as the logical, shock resistant, scratch resistant, and lightweight alternative to metals.

There is a general impression that the G-Shock brand has been relatively consistent, with a PVC resin made design and/or a metal band, but this overlooks the vast and colorful variation of the series all the way up to the superb model "MR-G" with sapphire glass cyrstal and titanium body, and the "L.X. (Elk X)" series with thick leather bands in 5600 models.
G-Shock Background
In 1981, Casio first began inventing a new kind of wristwatch, based on the "triple ten" concept: a 10 year battery life, 10 bar water resistance, and the ability to withstand the shock of a 10 meter freefall. This resulted in the "Gravity Shock" wristwatch, or G-shock series." [Source: Carlos Perez, Time-Zone], (August 2002). As originally designed, G-Shock timekeeping displays were digital with, or without an analog creative mechanism, intended to be sold at reasonable prices in Japan and eventually, exported all over the world.
The Casio G-Shock brand first appeared in Japan in 1981 - a 25-year history, that seems like just yesterday. In fact, the fire that ignited G-Shock popularity began less than 10 years ago in Japan, when the design of the G-Shock divers model first appeared. The first: the "Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers, Europe", model originated from the ID number, "5600". From this serial number, the fans of the G-Shock in Japan first became conscious of the G-Shock as a "street fashion" accessory.
At the height of the diver style digital watch popularity, about 7 years ago, G-Shock introduced the "Town & Country" licensed design, which, except for the name, was essentially the same. It failed to gain a popular following, and indeed added confusion to the brand, and was soon discontinued. This apparent setback actually added to the interest of the G-Shock brand name, as fans in Japan began to follow the fashion of the season with much more enthusiasm then before.
Today
Every year, sometimes every season, new models are introduced with revised, updated or new functions. As with the Swatch watches, G-Shocks have become collector`s items. The avid collectors of G-SHOCK and Baby-G in Japan run the complete gamut between the fanatic with their craze for the hallmark and serial numbers of the product on the back plate, which is everything to them, to the non-hallmarked serious collector of "G-SHOCK" which IS actually the true limited edition watch. (Last year, for example the hallmark "tea honey model" of Baby-G which was sold at selected retail stores only in Japan, was actually a very limited edition miniature replica of the trademarked and well-known Tiffany heart ). Several books, and many magazines dedicated exclusively to the G-Shock collector have been published about these models, specifications and details in Japan and elsewhere.

With lady users in mind, a smaller body size and foppish design was introduced for "the Baby-G" series. Even some men users found the original "G-SHOCK" too large. You can however call the series truly a unisex design. Still with the pastel colors and animated characters as the puppy you can currently play with in the liquid crystal display, the target was primarily for ladies.

A very eye catching model with "an automatic movement illumination function of the light/write" feature, the light-emitting diode of blue (originally white in the 1600 series ), lit up the watches clearly and beautifully. It was quite a fashion topic in magazines in Japan at the time.

Functions were limited to 1400 and 1500 series similarities and minimum requirements, but the existence of this "second hand" as a "tachnometer" came to the point of also having a "face". Only the 1600 series with LED was released with a special white "light/write automatic illumination" . A Tachometer measuring the average speed of a car, speedboat and the like, passing the distance of 1 km into several seconds and accurately. When the stopwatch is started at "zero" it allows the second hands to start, with the 1 km position activating the second hand, indicating an approximately average speed, with analog measurement in the chronograph model, measuring time from within 60 second block speeds.

With a metal body model in a base alloy of titanium, sapphire glass and extra fine finishing. Well-mastered luxury.

There is also the aforementioned tachometer feature depending upon the model. (In place of the second hand, there is a digital display for lap timing). There is no solar radio wave function like The-G . Decoration of a "strut bar" wind also raised the image status.
* G-Lide Series
Originally, because of the reputation as the sportsmen`s watch of choice for rugged versatility and low cost, the G-Lide series was born especially for the water sport enthusiasia. This series is distinct from frogman series for "lifeguards", has become a design with the kind of specifications favored by athletes and sportsmen all over the world. A tough solar function is equipped as the standard. The hallmark "of the pole" was administered to the limited edition series. There was also a limited edition model with a" grapple skill" wind as well.
* Triple-Crown Edition.
Named after the world famous surfing event , the "Triple Crown" from the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Owing in large part to the success of the G-lide official model, with the "anti-hydraulic efficiency" and "anti-shocking efficiency" for the first time, the G shock became a true worldwide brand. As a feature in regard to design "the resin band part was fused with the metal part the joint, and the hallmark that has become known as the "Triple Crown" was born. With the same functionality and specifications as "The-G", that is, the tough solar battery, and depending upon the model a "tide graph" ( high tide/ ebb tide) . In a unique back light Illumination of the Triple Crown logo lettering raised in the light/write feature.
* G-SHOCK Basic Style
The model which started the "anti- hydraulic efficiency" and "anti- shock efficiency" from 1983, the G shock was new to the world at the time, and set the standard for the digital sports watch. The design was indeed not that greatly differentiated and did not receive all that much public attention. However, these early models have become collector items to not a few avid collectors. Especially, the model series of 5600 of 23 years ago, the divers watch , my personal G shock debut still running and keeping great time, and finally, the more recent models with "temperature humidity measurement" sensors which have become the most sought after and increasingly hard to find models for the collectors in Japan.
* Baby-G Star-Amulet Series.
For ladies, the G shock baby G with an elegant metal body, the G-ms with the symbol of the heart . I mentioned earlier this Star-Amulet Series with the 12 constellations, from the popular Japanese illustrator designer Hitoe. The 12 constellation models of "Tripper-Wave" ,"radio wave" , 12 constellation, applying the four elements (fire, earth, wind, water) and set meaning as:

Perhaps because of the selection of name or non distinctive design, the Mudman has to date not gained a popular attraction in either Japan or the U.S. market. It is my guess that in the future, one day will again gain a popular collection and collectors status.

From The-G and cockpit series, the motor sports of the 50`s and 60`s fashioned with national colors. It first appeared in August of 2005 as a limited series.
From cockpit model: "ivory white (analog)",
From The-G digital series:
"Black (racing tire, reversal liquid crystal model)",
"Blue" (the French car named color),
From The-G combination series:
"White (Japan, model 1300, four squares Chronograph)"
"Green (the English color, model 1300)"
"Blue" the French named car, and the English named car, the "Lotus".
* Cockpit-Series.
As with the world fashion brands "Tag Heuer", " Olivetti" and "Longines",
the G-Shock "cockpit series" design is closely associated with the F1 racing motor sports world. This is an analog model series with "letter board raised white lettering," and meter winds. There is also the aforementioned tachometer feature depending upon the model. (In place of the second hand, there is a digital display for lap timing). There is no solar radio wave function like The-G . Decoration of a "strut bar" wind also raised the image status.
* G-Lide Series
Originally, because of the reputation as the sportsmen`s watch of choice for rugged versatility and low cost, the G-Lide series was born especially for the water sport enthusiasia. This series is distinct from frogman series for "lifeguards", has become a design with the kind of specifications favored by athletes and sportsmen all over the world. A tough solar function is equipped as the standard. The hallmark "of the pole" was administered to the limited edition series. There was also a limited edition model with a" grapple skill" wind as well.
* Triple-Crown Edition.
Named after the world famous surfing event , the "Triple Crown" from the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Owing in large part to the success of the G-lide official model, with the "anti-hydraulic efficiency" and "anti-shocking efficiency" for the first time, the G shock became a true worldwide brand. As a feature in regard to design "the resin band part was fused with the metal part the joint, and the hallmark that has become known as the "Triple Crown" was born. With the same functionality and specifications as "The-G", that is, the tough solar battery, and depending upon the model a "tide graph" ( high tide/ ebb tide) . In a unique back light Illumination of the Triple Crown logo lettering raised in the light/write feature.
* G-SHOCK Basic Style
The model which started the "anti- hydraulic efficiency" and "anti- shock efficiency" from 1983, the G shock was new to the world at the time, and set the standard for the digital sports watch. The design was indeed not that greatly differentiated and did not receive all that much public attention. However, these early models have become collector items to not a few avid collectors. Especially, the model series of 5600 of 23 years ago, the divers watch , my personal G shock debut still running and keeping great time, and finally, the more recent models with "temperature humidity measurement" sensors which have become the most sought after and increasingly hard to find models for the collectors in Japan.
* Baby-G Star-Amulet Series.
For ladies, the G shock baby G with an elegant metal body, the G-ms with the symbol of the heart . I mentioned earlier this Star-Amulet Series with the 12 constellations, from the popular Japanese illustrator designer Hitoe. The 12 constellation models of "Tripper-Wave" ,"radio wave" , 12 constellation, applying the four elements (fire, earth, wind, water) and set meaning as:
Amulet of fire: Aries, Jishi and shooter seats (image color: Red base)
Amulet of earth: Taurus and Virgo, Capricornus (image color: Brown base)
Amulet of wind: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius (image color: Grey base)
Amulet of water: Scorpius and Pisces Austrinus (image color: Blue base).
The Mudman
Perhaps because of the selection of name or non distinctive design, the Mudman has to date not gained a popular attraction in either Japan or the U.S. market. It is my guess that in the future, one day will again gain a popular collection and collectors status.
Other G-Shock noteworthy series not mentioned above include: Antman, Ape and Apex, Bape, and Bapex, Beams, Rastafarian, Stussy, Skyforce, Technoman, Tecnician, United Arrows and others that I will update (and please do email me if you find other noteworthy additions not listed here).
This is my attempt to classify the more collectable series in Japan and the U.S. that G-Shock and Baby G series has released to date, and continues to evolve and be updated here. As always, with the goal to be the most technologiclly advanced and eye catching!!
