Futurama- Guide to Futurama & Futurama Characters
Futurama is an animated series created by Matt Groening. Beginning in 1999, the series aired on the Fox network for four years, until its cancellation in mid-2003. The show continues to air on a variety of different networks through syndication. All its episodes are also available for purchase on DVD.
Futurama starts off in the year 1999, where its main character Fry, a pizza delivery guy, is accidentally frozen right before the millennium. He isn't thawed until 1,000 years later where he discovers that although the world has changed drastically, life still comes with the same problems. In fact, after finding his closest living relative, a crazy scientist named Professor Farnsworth, Fry ends up being employed by his relative as an intergalactic delivery boy.
Over the first few episodes of the show, Fry makes a number of colorful acquaintances. Bender is a loud, beer-drinking robot that becomes one of Fry's closest friends. Leela is a one eyed alien with purple hair and a tough attitude with whom Fry attempts numerous times to have more romantic relationship with. The show revolves around the character's relationships, the expansive world they live in and the numerous adventures they embark upon.
As opposed to The Simpsons, the other animated show created by Matt Groening, Futurama focuses on a world of single men and women. And as opposed to the quirky world of Springfield, Futurama takes place in the harsh New New York, where everyone has to fend for themselves. In fact, much of the show's humor comes from portraying a future that is far from perfect, in which many of society's worst traits are brought to the forefront. In this twisted humor lies the charm of Futurama, still popular years after its cancellation.
