Full-Size SUV's

Recently full-size SUV's have received a bad rap because gas prices have skyrocketed and the ecologically conscious have thrown paint and other things on them to symbolize the worst excesses of capitalistic consumption.  And that while it is true that single guys wanting to look stable (not apparent if you drive a Mustang or Corvette) and soccer moms wanting a dominant road position maybe would be better served with other vehicle choices, the bad rap is not warranted totally and these vehicles have a versatility not found elsewhere. It is also true that right now there are some terrific bargains on eBay and elsewhere on these vehicles!!!

My personal favorite among full-size SUV's are the offerings of General Motors, and especially the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe. I prefer the Z71 trim package for its distinctive appearance.  Now there are those who live in dry warm climates who insist that four-wheel-drive is unnecessary, extra cost and harsher riding as well as mileage-robbing.  To them, I say that if I'm going to have a large, bulky vehicle with a big V8 and truck suspension, I want the safety and versatility benefits that 4WD can offer.  While most soccer moms could probably be content with a Honda Odyssey minivan, the single "unstable" guys while some could get by with say a Honda Accord sedan, for their other "unstable" hobbies the Tahoe Z71 is perfect.  It can tow a pair of Harleys in a covered trailer, pack a bunch of snow skiers or tow a 25-foot cigarette boat (and there you go despoiling the environment again...but boats and bikes are "chick magnets" if you need to heighten your appeal with "stuff"...) and if they meet their future soccer mom, hopefully the boats and bikes and jet skis won't be sold...the minivan won't work for towing them or going into really tough country!!!

I admit to being a GM salesperson, but our dealership doesn't advertise on eBay so I have no axe to grind.  Ford products are OK but are not as maneuverable nor are they as wide for stability and comfort and I admit I need that width.  Toyota and Nissan are attemnpting to compete and while their products are always known for build quality, they simply started way behind in the torque race and torque is what is needed to move the bulk of the big SUV.  As for mileage, the 5.3 GM engine is from my experience almost a miracle motor...Tahoes and pickups when not too heavily laden or heavily pushed are capable of an honest 20-22 highway mpg.  So the full size SUV is nowhere near the villain it's cracked up to be...looks like it should be cast in the lead role instead!!!
