Full Metal Alchemist - Guide to Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Alchemist is a Japanese manga, or comic book, that has been transformed into an anime series (cartoon) on television. Although the television series ended after 51 episodes, the manga continues to this day, having reached over 13 volumes of adventures. Set in a parallel universe at the turn of the 20th century, Full Metal Alchemist follows the story of two brothers and their quest for the magical Philosopher's Stone.
What exactly is Full Metal Alchemist about? Historically, in the real world, alchemists were individuals who tried (unsuccessfully) to transform common metals into gold. In the manga, alchemists have far greater powers--capable of transforming matter into almost any other form. The main character, Edward Elric, is the youngest state alchemist in the world and travels with his younger brother Alphonse, whose spirit is bound to a large suit of armor.
Early in the cartoon, Alphonse loses his body during the brothers' failed attempt to revive their mother. His older brother saves him at the cost of an arm and leg--leading to Alphonse's spirit trapped in the armor and Edward's metal arm and leg. A great deal of their quest deals with the brothers trying to find a way to recover what they lost. The Philosopher's Stone is said to possess the power they need, which is why it is central to their search.
The global popularity of the manga and cartoon series has led to the release of a lot of spin-off merchandise. From necklaces, to pocket watches, posters and toys, there is an extensive list to choose from. Fans can also purchase copies of the manga in either Japanese or a number of other languages. DVDs of the television show are also available.
