As one starts their search for the perfect item on Ebay it does not take long to notice sellers stating FREE SHIPPING!!!!  I always find it really amazing when the item being shipped is a piece of furniture. Anyone that has used UPS, FedEx, or USPS knows shipping heavy items incur a fairly hefty price tag. Of course knowing that makes the FREE SHIPPING so much more appealing. That is the seller's hook to get your attention.

Let's think about free shipping. Logically people realize there is a cost for shipping, sellers can hide it in the purchase price and mark it as FREE SHIPPING or they can list actual cost of shipping. (There is also the seller that inflates the cost sky high, but that is another topic.) The other way a seller can offer free shipping is to use a drop shipper that already adds the cost to the item purchased and may just charge the seller a handling fee. The seller never actually has the item so they have no real clue as to what portion of the price is for the actual item and what is shipping cost. (Nor does the seller actually have someone inspect the item prior to shipping since.)

Just as the sayings go, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is" and "there is no such thing as a free lunch", the same can be said for FREE SHIPPING. Even large companies that offer this enticement or a very minimal shipping cost have already added the shipping in to the purchase price.

The little Mom and Pop sellers oftern get by passed for the sleeker big box companies and the sellers on Ebay that hide the actual shipping cost. Frequently buyers end up paying more for the item with the "FREE SHIPPING" then they would by going with someone charging a realistic shipping price and the item at a fair price. Don't get me wrong, when I started on Ebay I was awed by sellers being able to offer Free Shipping but the more I looked and researched, the more I found out the charges were there, just put in a sleeker package. That also goes for those really minimal shipping charges on heavy items. UPS, USPS, and FedEx may give large companies discounts but last I heard NO ONE really gets these services for FREE!!
