Due to rampant online fraud, great care must be taken when buying DVDs and
series sets on eBay. There are many Internationally produced "knock-offs" out there
that are deliberately misrepresented and sold as US produced versions,
and their target market is the US. Sellers in another country
cannot be prosecuted by the US for fraud. I have learned that in
Shanghai for instance, you can buy any Star Trek series season on many
streetcorners for about $1.00 US, each. Duping US buyers for more money is a huge
attraction. Part of the problem is that expert hackers have
hacked their way into eBay's system and managed to access and use old US
based user IDs, ones that have not been used for several years. Example: I have seen several sellers use exactly the same listing under
several different seller IDs. If you check the seller feedback, it is
always a low number and there has been no activity for several years.
The item listed is represented as a US produced set of DVDs, but what
you will receive is a cheaply produced knock-off. If you attempt to contact these sellers after you receive
the item, you will not get a response. One or more buyers will complain
to eBay and eBay will then remove the listing and advise you to contact
your bank or credit card company. Buyers need to be more careful and study the
listings carefully and then they may not be so easily duped. Some buyers actually accept
it when they receive an item that is dramatically different from what
they thought they purchased. This is part of the problem, not enough
people complaining to eBay. If you're not 100% sure you're bidding on a
US produced set of DVDs from a US based seller, don't bid on it. I generally trust sellers who state in their listings that they do not sell bootlegs, pirated copies, or knock-offs. Trust
your gut instinct and go with it. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle
trying to get your money back if you are not satisfied with what you
receive. International sellers are not the only culprits. There are dishonest ones right
here in the US too. You might want to think twice before buying from a
seller who keeps their feedback set to "private." If you can't see the
feedback, you just might be shooting yourself in the foot if you go
ahead and buy from this seller. Happy buying and good luck!
