The Franklin Mint is well-known for making several quality game sets, including Monopoly, Scrabble, and several different chess sets. One of the first chess sets produced by the Franklin Mint was the Civil War Chess Set. Created in 1983 in conjunction with the National Historic Society, this set pits the Union against the Confederacy in a chess-reenactment of the Civil War! This set features several unique attributes such as:
- A 12x12-inch wooden game board with blue and gray squares that opens up to house the chess pieces for this set.
- Pewter chess pieces, approximately two inches high, accented in blue or gray enamel depicting several Civil War heroes, with Ulysess S. Grant and Robert E. Lee serving as the kings on the Union and Confederate sides respectively.
- A set of booklets that provides some biographical information about each of the different playing pieces.
This chess set can often be found for sale right here on E-Bay. In addition, replacement pieces can be found to replace damaged pieces from your set, whether you need a new pawn or bishop for this set. Even if you don't have this chess set, these finely-detailed pieces can serve as a small statuette that you can proudly display in your home.
