Test for color: Testing should be done on your neck/jawline area. It should match closely to your skin color.
Application: There are a number of ways for applying foundation. Partly, this is due to the various kinds of foundations. For liquid foundations, apply a small amount of the foundation to the back of your hand, and use a foundation brush to apply. This brush also may be used to apply cream foundation. This type of brush is usually synthetic.
Loose powder foundations are to be applied with a brush also. Dip the brush in the powder and shake off the extra. This should be done in the cap of the container so as not to waste the product. This brush should be fairly full and round and made from natural/sable bristles.
Remember that the greater amount of foundation starts at the center/nose area of one's face and blends out to the sides. Blend, blend, blend to get the best coverage and the most natural look.
Be sure to keep your brushes clean. This can be done by dipping the bristles into brush cleaner or by using a very mild soap (on occasion, I use my clarifying shampoo). be care and make sure that you do not loosen the bristles by getting the area of the brush that holds the bristles wet.
Wearing foundation sets a beautiful face canvas on which to apply the colors of blush. To give a smooth finish to your face, apply powder. Be careful in the amount you use so that you don't get that "cakey" look. You want to look as natural as possible. A face with a beautiful, healthy glow.
