This guide is for those who may be considering to buy a Florida license plate to register to an antique/classic car. I have noticed lately that everyone wants to advertise their old FL tag as "YOM clear" or "ok for registration". The fact of the matter is, there are strict guidelines to follow when considering a plate.
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Is the plate/car AT LEAST 25 years old? If not, it cannot be registered Under YOM laws.
2. What condition is the plate in? I have heard horror stories from people I know about this. If the plate is not in very good to mint condition, the state will most likely not allow you to register it. In fact, they will usually not send the plate back to you!
3. Is it original? I have seen some amazing classic car restorations, as well as some amazing license plate restorations. While these plates may be desirable to a collector (or an antique car owner who cannot find a good enough original plate to register), THEY CANNOT BE REGISTERED TO YOUR VEHICLE!! The only way you could use a restored plate on your car would be at a car show. You could not legally use a restored plate on your car according to FL state law. If you send a nice restored plate to have it registered, don't count on getting it back. On a brighter note, there are other options. For example, you could apply for an "Antique" or "Horseless Carriage" license plate, depending on the age of your vehicle. Hope you find this guide helpful!
NOTE: I HAVE JUST REC'D WORD THAT THE RULE ABOUT RESTORED PLATES IS EVIDENTLY UP TO THE CLERK AT THE DMV COUNTER. Better hope they're in a good mood when you go in there :)
