I'm a collector. I look for deals not profits. Yet I becoming increasingly concerned about the number of listings from the pacific rim that seems to have a endless supply of odd looking coins. I'm one of those earily folks last year, when I found a deal of a life time. Trade dollars at a affordable out of China. At the speed of light I sent $70+ thru western union. Soon I got 2 metal discs that where stamped like trade dollars and a box full of green corroded stuff (artofacts fakes, I guess) from china. Accompanied by a message that I hope you buy lots more. Soon thereafter I found some articles by international coin dealers attending a trade show in china that discovered these fakes only after weighing them back in the states.
I'm still collecting and I starting to see those same odd looking coins, but this time they are Morgans. There's something about the imaging of the face, plus the lack of stamping quality, while trying to make it look distressed. Also the color or texture, doesn't translate right to the camera. This is not a scientific or technical measure but it's my observation. Some fakes are easy pertcularly when they offer a CC mint on a date that it was never struck.
Good luck to ebay the gauntlet of fraud and deseption is getting deeper and deeper. It will have an effect on the ebay model.
