I recently had the joy of actually sewing with fleece. I've fringed fleece for scarves and I've blanket stitched it for blankets, but this was my first experience with sewing fleece garments, so I did some research.
Did you know?:
- Fleece is a knit ~ so it stretches. Do not cut it on the bias!
- Use a stretch needle for sewing.
- Use a zig zag stitch so when it is stretched the seam won't pop out (from Mary with the Gator Project ~ see my Creative kindness guide ~ Thank you Mary!!)
- Use the "with nap" fabric requirements on your pattern envelope.
- Use a walking foot to help with bulk.
- Use a larger seam allowance. Try 1/2 inch or even 1 inch!
- Use a longer stitch length and loosen tensions settings to avoid puckering/distortion. (Or, as in my case, to be able to rip out a seam if/when you need to!)
- Keep your sewing machine free of excessive lint build up.
- Use a water soluble stabilizer on the top if you are embroidering. (keeps the stitches on the top ~ so they don't sink in!)
- Fleece doesn't shrink or fray.
- Use decorative threads/trims to add interest.
- Machine wash in warm water inside out with similar fabrics. To reduce pilling wash only with similar fabrics ~ no "ruff" fabrics or towels or buttons.
- Do not use bleach, fabric softner, or dryer sheets.
Do you know how to tell the wrong side of the fabric? Tug on the stretchy crossgrain of the fabric ~ the fabric will curl to the wrong side. This actually did seam to work for me, but the best advice is to pick your favorite side and use it consistently!
Fleece is a lightweight, fun fabric that insulates and keeps you warm and dry. It comes in lots choices and is easy to work with. Give it a try!
