We live on a lake in Iowa called Lake Red Rock. It is a fabulous lake with many species of fish and there is an abundance of them. We just love to go out and bank fish the brush piles and rocky coves where the shad are o plenty and this is where the catfish love to hang out. This is the first trick to catfishing. You will need to locate the baitfish first and foremost. This is the main food source for the cats. Once you locate the baitfish, you may need to chum the hole. We use soured corn here in Iowa which works great but soured wheat works the best if you have access to it. Just take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with the desired chum whether it be corn or wheat and fill the container with water and let it set at least a week for it to sour. (the longer the better) Once you have your chum you can take a 1 gallon container with you and dump it in the waters you will be fishing to attract the catfish. This also helps to attract the baitfish which will bring the cats. This is not necessary but very effective if you are not getting many bites. Always fish on the bottom of the lake or river with a tight line. The pole you use is really up to you. I like to use a surf rod with at least 35 lb test line in case the big cats are feeling spicy. You can use many baits such as shad, worms, crickets, hot dogs, chicken livers, minnows or just about any bait should land a catfish for you. There are hundreds of options here. You can do your homework right here on the internet for the best bait to use in your area. You can also fish for the almighty catfish using your hands (also known as noodling-or grabling) You will have to check with your local authorities to see if this is legal. You can use limb lines, trot lines, and I have even heard of people using a deep sea diving suit and a gaff to take their cats.
