Going green...buyer beware! Is it eco-friendly or eco-fake? Did you know that the trend for "Going Green" is unregulated? Yes, the eco friendly products you bought may have been harmful to the environment. Not to fear, there's still time to save Mother Earth!
1) Do not buy products simply named "Eco-_______". Also, anything dubbed "Natural" may not be natural! Read the label first! Look for labels that say, "USDA Organic", certified organic or 100% recycled post consumer paper. Certified animal friendly(jumping bunny logo) is another example.
2) Buy products that have been determined eco friendly. Energy Star and WaterSense are standards certified by the EPA for energy and water efficient products, respectively. "Certified Organic" is also a standard for beauty and food items that must contain at least 95% organic ingredients. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifies items containing wood that was respectfully harvested.
3) Just because it costs more, doesn't mean it's better. This holds true for anything. Companies take advantage of unsuspecting buyers by pairing "Eco-_______" with a higher price tag. Don't believe the hype!
4) If you're gonna buy green clothing, but don't want to spend alot of green...shameless plug...BUY VINTAGE! Cheap alternatives, H & M has an organic cotton line. JC Penney has sustainable items. If you don't mind spending a few extra bucks...Hemp stores are high end green.
5) Buy cleaning products that have been determined "NON-TOXIC". FYI, any product you can make out in the photo below is a non toxic cleaner! Products by "Mrs. Meyer", like essential oils are wonderful and smell awesome. Palmolive's eco friendly version is phosphate free.
Baking Soda, Bon Ami Cleanser, Borax, Club Soda, Cornstarch, Lemon Juice, Liquid Dish Soap(7th Generation...Palmolive or Ivory), Olive or Vegetable Oil, Salt, White Vinegar
6) Cleaning products to avoid(especially if you have babies or young children, like us, whose neurological systems are still developing). Chlorine bleach and anything with formaldehyde(it's in alot of stuff!). Also, avoid petroleum based items...think about the oil crisis! Green cleaning products will have biodegradeable plant ingredients, are softer on aquatic life and break down faster.
7) Avoid using plastics! Use glass if possible. Plastic containers, plastic bags, ALL THINGS PLASTIC! Try to avoid using plastic sandwich bags, even if you reuse them(i.e. clean them and use them again). Toxic plastic can get in your food from the constant wear of using the same bag over and over again.
8) About shampoo and other beauty products for your skin and body. Folks, this stuff gets absorbed into your skin everytime you use them. Think about it...everyday, your entire life. Start using products that are non-toxic. Especially, skin products and products for your baby(their skin is more permeable). We won't know the environmental effects of the majority of these products for another 20 years. Think of parabens(carcinogens), commonly found in everyday things. So it's best to "nip it in the bud". "An ounce of prevention" and other cliche's. Go organic and buy non-toxic soap for starters, then move on to shampoo and ultimately makeup.
9) Go organic! Use products that are organic. There are hundreds of everyday household items that can be used in a pinch to solve all of life's little problems.
We hope this brief tutorial has helped you out. God Bless. Baby Keanu Vintage
