This memorable dixieland jazz band had its roots in the Walt Disney Studio in 1940 when Walt Disney hosted a big employee party to celebrate the opening of his "new" Burbank studio. Several of the studio's animators spread the word and the event was a rousing success.
In 1948, the "Fire House Five + 2" was born when Ward Kimball purchased a 1914 American La France fire truck for $225. Just add some red fireshirts, white suspenders and authentic leather fire helmets, and a fun new era in jazz history had begun. Their first paid concert would be held when jazz trombonist Kid Ory asked the FH5 to cover for him at a Los Angeles High School dance at the Barney Oldfield Country Club.
