Finding Used & Out of Print Books
Before the Internet came along, locating out-of-print books could often be a very time-consuming process. Particularly if you were after a rare book or a first edition, you could count on spending many hours calling various booksellers in an attempt to track it down.
When it came to shopping for used and out-of print books, you rarely had the option to compare prices between sellers. Chances were you only found one of two copies of the book you were looking for, and you had no choice but to buy it for the asking price. Now, all of that has changed.
Booksellers, too, have benefited greatly from used and out-of-print book sales on the Internet. In the past, a bookseller might wait many months before a customer strolled into the store who happened to be interested in a certain obscure out-of-print book. Now, the Internet makes it possible for booksellers to offer specialty items to a much wider audience.
For college students, used books can be an excellent alternative to purchasing new editions in the university bookstore. Auction sites like eBay allow you to seek the absolute lowest price for the book you need. Most sellers offer detailed descriptions of the book's condition, so if you're the type who doesn't like to read books with other people's notes or highlighting, you can make sure to receive a clean copy. Once the semester is over, of course, you can use the same system to sell your books to other students, further increasing your savings.
