Like any furniture purchase, buying the right bunk bed requires a lot of thought and preparation; there are many factors to consider before making a final decision. Unlike other furniture purchases, buying a bunk bed often involves a third party: your child. While you might see a bunk bed as an economic and space saving solution to your children's slumber needs, your kids will undoubtedly view it as their own private abode. This step by step guide is here to help you choose the bunk bed that makes both you and your child happy.

Step 1: Determine Your Space Needs

If you are already thinking about buying a bunk bed, space is most likely an issue. Small rooms benefit greatly from a bunk or lofted bed, but there are plenty of beneifits for large rooms, as well. First measure the space in questions - just how much fo you have? When considering a loft or bunk bed, ceiling height is extremely important so don't forget to measure up! Bunk beds and loft beds vary in height, but the average bunk stands about 6 feet tall. You want to make sure there is at least 2 feet of space between the top bunk and the ceiling - this will cut down on unnecessary bumps and bruises.

In terms of width and depth, standard bunk beds usually don't take up more space than a regular twin or full size bed, but not all bunk beds are considered standard. Bunk or loft beds now come in a variety of options - with trundle beds, storage drawes, desks, in T-shapes or in L-shapes and can safely hold anywhere from 2 to 4 kid! It is important to keep in mind that the more elaborate the set up, the more space you will need.

Step 2: Which Type of Bunk Bed Will Fulfill Your Needs?

Bunk beds have evolved over the years. Now there exists a wider variety of designs - from basic, no frills design, to elaborate combinations of features; we offer bunk and loft beds that cover the entire range of styles.

Basic Bunk Bed: this classic design is still as functional as always, providing exactly what most people need. It is available in twin over twin, twin over full, or full over full sizes.

Futon Bunk Bed: one lofted - usually twin size - bed over a futon. The multi-purpose design allows you to use the futon as a couch during the day and a full size bed at night. It creates a casual atmosphere for popular rooms known to attract guests.

Tri/Triple Bunk Bed: one bunk bed attached to a third, lofted bed. This L-shaped design is perfect for 3 children sharing a room or for larger sleep overs.

T-Shaped Bunk Bed: one lofted bed with a bottom bunk that runs perpendicular to the top one. It provides the same amount of sleeping space as a basic bunk bed, but with a fresh, new look. An ideal design for rooms with a bit more space!

Study Loft: the third type of loft bed. It allows you to fit a lot more into a small space; with this design you won't need to factor in space for a desk.

Novelty Beds: geared towards younger children, novelty bunk or loft beds center around a certain theme, or in some cases simply a vibrant color scheme. Many novelty beds, like junior loft beds, are closer to the ground and feature tents and slides.
