When looking for childrens' clothing to resell on Ebay there are 2 crucial factors in determining the saleability of the clothing:
-
Brand name (Boutique, Mall Brands, Mart Brands)/Stylishness
-
Condition (New, Used, Well Used)
Brand Name: The Brand name and stylishness of an item go hand in hand. There are generally 3 tiers of children's clothing:
- Boutique Brands: These brands are sold in small boutiques. Many of the clothing is made in USA, Canada, Spain, France, etc. (usually not China). These items cannot be found in a mall. Boutique items are the most desirable and can often sell on their own. One item or one outfit. Examples: Baby Lulu, Litle Mass, Cach Cach, Cottontails, Sweet Potatoes, and many, many more.
- Mall Brands: Mall brands are generally clothing from common mall stores such as Gap, Old Navy, The Children's Place, Limited Too, Aeropostale, etc. Some of these items can sell as an outfit but do better in lots of several outfits or like items. Department store brands (from Macy's, Lord & Taylor, etc.) sell best when they are within a lot of like quality clothing.
-
Mart Brands: Mart brands refer to clothing from a Discount Retailer such as Walmart, KMart, Target, etc. Since these items are available countrywide and at reasonable prices there is little market for new (NWT) clothing from these stores. However some styles, such as the Mary Kate & Ashley line from Walmart, do hold some resale value. In addition excellent condition Mart Brands can do well in a large lot of same size/same season clothing.
Remember that ALL brands are best when offered of a current or classic style. Outdated clothing has little resale value. Of course trends and fads are constantly fluctuating so styles that are out of style in one area of the country may still be in style elsewhere so there is definitely a buffer which allows clothing to be worn in style and resold while still in style (somewhere at least!)
Condition: The condition of an item must be considered when buying for resale
Most Children's Clothing offered on Ebay is rated from NWT (New With Tags), EUC (Excellent Used Condition) to Play wear (most likely a small stain or flaw). The better the condition the higher the value. Clothing that is threadbare, heavily pilled or stained should not be offered for sale. Occassionaly items with a small ink dot or bleach mark in a non-obvious spot will sell. These listings must include a closeup of the flaw with a ruler or object for size reference.
Whether you are cleaning out your own children's outgrown clothing (the way most of us sellers begin!) or contemplating buying deeply discounted clothing, I hope the above overview will help you determine into what areas of clothing to invest your time and money.
