First of all let me say I love fuzzys (a pet name for ferrets) . You have to spend a lot of time with them because they like to play. They can be litter trained and let out of their cage .BUT YOU MUST TAKE CARE TO PROTECT YOUR PETS. Fix a place where they can't get out of the house .Rotate their toys because they are like kids they loose interest .They like to burrow and craw in things .There is a lot of tubeand things you can get for them to play in .They even make playpens you can get. The thing I have the most fun with is either a leg from an old pair of pants or a old blanket . Mine love these to play with. Do not let them play with anything small enough to swallow regardless if its a "ferret toy" or not Its better to be safe then sorry.
Make sure your pet sees the vet. They need shots just like your dog or cat . Vet bills can get quite high sometimes so be prepared just in case. MAKE SURE your vet has treated ferrets before .Believe me I've had bad experiences with this recently.
What do I do if I have a sick fuzzy ?
1.take it to the vet. Tell the vet what you have seen. Remember the fuzzy cant speak for themselves though sometime I think mine can.
2. Here is a good example . I have a ferret named toodles. We almost lost him before I could get him to the vet. He would not drink nor eat correctly.
Vet number 1 said he had a simple bladder infection and had to be hydrated. (wrong answer) I almost lost him.As a last ditch effort I bought some #1chicken baby food and watered it down a lot.Guess what he started getting better but continued to have bad days.
Off to the vet we went again..... This time we got someone who knew more about ferrets ... She did x rays and found he has lipoma a form of cancer. She had me ad ad cat food to the baby food mixture and put him on meds ... Since that time we have changed it to a soft canned ferret food and the chicken baby food .With the proper love and care he now eats from a bowl ,plays and is the best pet I ever had .He love being played with and petted.
A good vet that knows about your type pet and love and care makes all the difference.
Where to get a fuzzy? I would get young ones that are healthy fron a Smaller pet store that gets them from small ferret farms the animals are treated better.
What if I dont know how to care for one?
1 Ask questions at the pet store..
2 A book I sujets is Ferrets for Dummies This is a great book and gives even experienced people some good tips.
They do bite but can be trained not to with a product called time out. But read the directions! Dont get it In your mouth from your hands UCK!!!!!!!!! bad tast and is hard to get off but its worth it because it does work.
3 Keep its cage clean for 2 reasons 1 the smell and second to keep your baby healthy
And if you can afford it get two not just one because they can keep each other occupied when you are bizzy and they will make you laugh just watching them play together.
I also would get the book above first read it then decide if you have the time for one of my little friends. Also make sure you are allowed to have them where you live.
Remember some states Dont allow you to have them as pets. Why I have know idea but its their loss not mine.
So please if you dont have the time or dont want to spend what it takes to have them for a pet Dont GET ONE.
If you do Enjoy your new friend(s)
