I have found this to be an easy and fast way to give your pet dog a bath.
The first thing I do is thoroughly brush and snip through tangles and/or mats .
You will need your :dog brush, scissors, dog shampoo,
an empty shampoo bottle,a few cotton balls and one more towel than you usually use. (If you are
concerned about getting soap in its eyes,
you may want to use a product called Safe Eye manufactured by Top Performance.
One to 2 drops per eye. I have always used mineral oil in a visine bottle (be sure to empty the visine out 1st)
If you are concerned about getting water in your dog's ears
put some cotton from the cotton ball inside the outer ears.
Make sure the room is warm.
Here are some helpfil hints for brushing your dog before bathing.
Brush your dog gently but throughly before bathing. 1st brush with the lay of the hair,
then brush against the lay of the hair.
If you find tangles or a mat(s) you are going to split the tangles/mat by cutting down the middle of it.This is done by scooping the tip of the scissors between the skin and hair so you are trimming AWAY from the skin(NOT towards it).
"Split" the tangles/mat as many times as needed and brush them/it out.
To bathe:
I use an E M P T Y 16 ounce clear shampoo bottle. Pour about 2 ounces of tearless pet shampoo in it
and fill the it half to 3/4 full with warm water and shake it up.
I squirt the warm diluted shampoo starting at the rear of the dog and work up to head. Apply the diluted shampoo ona a cotton ball and then apply it to the face . I always cover the dogs eyes by shielding it with my hand when squirtung the diluted shampoo on the head.
(When squiring the diluted shampoo to the body most shampoo bottle lids are"directional" so you can squirt up when applying shampoo underneath the dog)
Remember, if you or your dog is nervous about shampooing its face just squirt the diluted shampoo on a cotton ball
and use the cotton ball to apply the diluted shampoo to the face.
This is a very fast way to shampoo your dog because all wet areas have the diluted shampoo. If there is a dry area, just squirt it with diluted shampoo.
Gently hand scrub the entire dog and the it is important to then gently brush the dog with the lay of the hair while wet .
Rinse throughly. Then towel off and RINSE AGAIN. Many dogs can have skin problems because the shampoo is not throughly rinsed.
This method using diluted shampoo has great rinseability and using
the toweling method between rinses gives the most thorough rinsing.
Throughly towel dry.If drying with a dryer. If you did not put cotonin its ears for bathing, now might be a good time to do this if the noise of the dryer bothers it and the cotton can keep the
forced air of the dryer from irritating sensitive ears).
DO remember to remove the cotton from its ears after drying.
When drying the head, I prefer to not direct the air towards the face, but rather from the back of the head.
This usually takes 5 to 12 minutes for the actual bathing. So here is a synopsis or fast version for what you do:
1). Squirt on shampoo, hand scrub and brush
2). rinse
3). towel off excess water
4) rinse again
5) towel dry and/or dryer dry,(remove cotton from ears)
Just keep in mind you need to use kindness and control.
Make this as fast and easy on both of you and give lootsa love and treats after so it is a pleasant experience.
Hope this helps. Have Fun!!.
Larger and some medium dense or long haired dogs may require more diluted shampoo and more towels.
A couple of places I like to get pet supplies from are Pet Edge Pet Supplies and UPCO Pet Supplies.
If your pet has skin problems, have your veternarian recommend the correct shampoo. Self diagnosing/medicating your pet can cause you to spend tons of money on over the counter products that dont help. Your veterenarian will help.
