Green is the new black. Sami-Designs reports on the rise of eco-chic.
Last spring during New York's biannual Fashion Week, designers including Oscar de la Renta and Diane von Furstenberg showed their values on the runway at FutureFashion, a show sponsored by the environmental activism group Earth Pledge. Organic clothing sales are on the rise according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA). While many are familiar with organic cotton and hemp, new stars on the horizon include soy and bamboo fabrics that feel like silken cashmere and have the added benefit of killing germs that cause odor and fabric degradation.
Actually the demand for all-things-green began years ago. Georgio Armani introduced hemp jeans and organic cotton shirts as early as 1995, and Woody Harrelson sported an Armani hemp suit at the Oscars. Since then many fashion designers have encorporated green values into their design concepts including Stella McCartney, Todd Oldman, Vera Wang, Betsy Johnson, and Jessica Ogden.
While many big name fashion designers are introducing a green line, the current shift towards eco-chic has opened the doors to a new breed of designer. Style with substance defines this new movement.
