If you are new to gardening, planting anything other than bulbs in the fall may sound crazy. In truth, this is the best time to plant perennials in your garden! Its easy to see where there are empty spots in your garden, where you may want to add height, texture or a different color. Its also best for plants! The roots have all winter to grow without having to use energy to generate growth above the soil. When spring arrives your plant will be ready to stand the sudden rise in temperature and dry spells much better since the roots are better established. A layer of mulch, straw, or pine needles will protect even small perennials over the winter. Its also easier on the gardener! Temps are cooler, soil is easier to work before it freezes and packs down.
Do your garden(and yourself) a favor and try fall planting!
