1. big problem is with McCoys but applies to virtually all expensive cookie jars. McCoy's logo trademark lapsed and someone else snapped it and began putting logo on everything imaginable.
2. If you think you have stumbled across an unwitting seller, and want to get a real steal, think twice. Watch out for fuzzy or small pictures, little or no descriptive text, sellers who are vague, evasive or plead ignorance about the jar they have listed, etc. Move on and save yourself disappointment.
3. There is a market for reproductions. Not everyone can afford a genuine jadeite Mammy. Sellers should be upfront if its a reproduction, and not weasel-word the buyer into thinking its an original. Buyers should ask tough questions.
4. Use the eBay search engine to look at other auctions. If you see a dozen identical Shawnee jars being offered at $39, take the clue.
5. Don't be afraid to ask other cookie jar sellers with good feed for an opinion. Most serious collectors/seller want to stamp out fraudulent or intentionally misleading items.
