I noticed today a fake vintage Mosrite guitar with over 20 bids, thanks to a very cleverly written description. I don't know if it's a current trend, but the advert describes the instrument as being "produced in the famous Firstman factory". Looking at the particular guitar in the auction, there is no "Of California" written beneath the logo on the headstock, and there are no ® trademarks next to the logos on the pickups.
Let's get a few things straight:
Firstman was a Japanese company that copied Mosrite guitars in the late 1960's. These guitars were built in Japan. Taking advantage of the demand for Mosrite guitars in Japan, following the success of The Ventures , Firstman copied Mosrite guitars even down to the logo! Sometimes these guitars have Mosrite Avenger written on the headstock. Sometimes they have Firstman written on the tremelo system. Sometimes they are practically identical except they don't have "of California" written beneath the logo, and they don't have ® symbols next to the logos on the pickups. Mosrite Avengers, and other Firstman Mosrites, may look the real deal, but they are in fact nothing but Japanese copies of the American guitars. Firstman evolved into the company that was making Mosrite guitars up until 3 years ago (with the logo, but without a proper license).
The seller has very cleverly written his description, stating that it is a very rare vintage Mosrite guitar, without falsely stating it is an American Mosrite Of California guitar, but ALSO without clearly stating it is a late 60's Japanese copy.
When buying a Mosrite guitar, put in some groundwork and do some research online. DON'T just believe what Ebay descriptions tell you. Unlike other copy guitars, the Firstman Mosrites were very accurate. Without care and research, you could end up paying thousands of dollars for sommething that's worth $400.
