All of these fakes come from China as far as I know. Nearly all have the following tell tale ways to tell they are fakes:
The originals were originally made by Bradley & Hubbard and Waterbury with cast iron cases. Nearly all of the fakes are of a poorer quality cast iron and some are aluminum.
Winding hole at 6 o'clock real ones have winding hole at 3 o'clock
Porcelian dial real ones are all paper
Bezel hinges at 12 o'clock real ones at 9 o'clock
Eyes move side to side real ones eyes move up and down
Movement seperater posts held with nuts real ones have tapered pins
Hands are fastened to shaft with a hex nut real ones use a tapered pin
Dial has no slot in it below 12 o'clock for adjusting clock real ones have a semi circuler slot about an inch long just below 12 o'clock. A few of the Colonials were made with pendulum movements and do not have the slot.
The above information covers the various figures of persons not animals. All of the animals I believe had pendulum movements that have a slightly smaller dial and the real ones have winding hole at 9 o'clock and the bezel hinges at 3 o'clock
There is one dealer on ebay selling fakes that have nearly all of the things I have mentioned correct. The movements are poor quality however but the dealer does not try to pass them off as the real thing.
