In mid-May of this year (2006) I was in Ho Chi Minh City (Sai Gon). I bought seven fake dollars from a cyclo driver. I was about half sure they were fake when I bought them, so I only paid $40.00 for the lot. Now I am sure they are fakes. They are of various dates and mint marks; 1798, 1804, 1840, 1848. 1881, and 1925.
The day after I bought them the same man showed me that he had more of them, including what appearred to be a solid silver 1971. I'm not a coin collector but I know the 1971 Ikes were nickel-copper sandwhiches. I also bought a 1798-S, not a possiblity unless there was mint in Syracuse. The same fellow also had a group of old French coins.
