This is a multi-ray canceling device found on Hong Kong Queen Victoria stamps. Where was it struck is still a mystery, some say that it was struck at Shanghai British Post Office around 1865-66 before Shanghai received its canceling device, the S1 barred killer. There are two letters from Japan to Shanghai bearing Hong Kong QV stamps canceled with this postmark in 1866. Others argue that it could have been struck on the mailboats between Shanghai and Japan. Nevertheless, it is classified by Col. F.W. Webb in his "bible" of Hong Kong philately as a Shanghai mark. It is found on Hong Kong QV stamps in a particular shade of blue and also in black with or without B62 killer mark of Hong Kong. Some HK experts believe that most if not all the BLACK sunbursts are fakes, particularly so when appearing with a B62. High power magnification of such stamps would show that the sunburst is above the B62 mark which is impossible bearing in mind that the sunburst was used as a canceling device between Japan and Shanghai. Furthermore, among the four 1866 covers in extant, none have B62 overstruck. Genuine covers: There are four, two to Japan, two to Shanghai. Fake covers: It is rumored that there are at least two covers from Shanghai to England with stamps canceled B62 and fake black sunburst applied afterwards. There is even one with RED sunburst!

Recently, two examples of BLUE sunbursts on 1900 QV issue were listed on the internet, both from China. It is hard to tell whether the blue is the correct shade, but it is suffice to say that both are fakes since the sunburst was replaced by the S1 killer in 1866.
