The most commonly used containers used in geocaching are military "ammo" cans, which are generally waterproof and conveniently painted a nice shade of green that aids "geocachers" when they decide to create their own "hides".
As geocaching has increased in popularity, the desire for different and unique methods of hiding caches has become
a sport in itself. Many urban caches are as simple as an "Altoids" can painted black and a magnet epoxy to its back, enabling it to be concealed on virtually any steel surface. The most common being rod iron fences around historic or business locations.
Pine River Unlimited, a brick and click company, specifically focuses on fake stumps. The fake stump is constructed using a poly carbonate container surrounded by real pine bark and a top consisting of a slice of pine wood, this produces the appearance of a tree stump. What makes a fake stump a unique hide is the fact that it can be hidden in urban or rural settings equally well and provide the ability to essentially hide caches in plain sight. Pine River Unlimited currently produces three sizes: 3"x6" which is ideal for hiding house keys, coins, small items. 5"x7" which is about the size of a peanut butter jar, and a 7"x11" which is large enough to hide just as many items as”ammo" can if not more. The 3"x6" and 5"x7" fake stumps are sold here on e-bay and the 7"x11" is made by special request by contacting the manufacturer.
