It's been a while since I've seen a new eBay related e-mail scam, and because of that, I almost clicked a link I shouldn't have. Read on and stay alert!
Had it not been for the fact that I'm already a PowerSeller, I may not have thought twice about the PowerSeller invitation e-mail I recently received. Even so, I had been slacking in my listings lately and had just started a bunch of new auctions, so at first I thought I may have lost my ranking and was now being invited back. But that brief pause was enough time to notice a few problems with the e-mail.
First of all, the link in the e-mail was obviously not an eBay link. Usually the scammers will make at least some effort to make the link look "eBay-ish", in this case they did not. So lesson number one is look carefully at the link before you click it. Even if it says ebay.com in the link, make sure that's actually where it's going.
Your best bet is to always log in to eBay first, and check "My Messages". Anything important from eBay will also be there. And if you log in first before clicking an e-mail link, you shouldn't be asked to log in again. If you are, chances are it's a spoof site "phishing" for your account information.
As disturbing as it was, I did get a chuckle out of it- although the "From" was an eBay.com address, the "Reply To" was and "eBay.con". Dot CON indeed.
