Similar to our posting on fake and reproduction cookie jars, here are some basic and quick things to learn which can help you recognize reproduction McCoy wallpockets. There are many wallpockets being marked McCoy that were never produced by McCoy.
Here are some tips. They can't guarantee you won't get fooled, but they can help lessen the chance you will unknowingly buy a reproduction.
McCoy NEVER made a frog wall pocket.
McCoy NEVER made a nude wall pocket.
McCoy NEVER made a Native American Indian wall pocket.
McCoy NEVER made a telephone wall pocket.
McCoy NEVER made a Spaniel, Scottie or other dog head wall pocket.
McCoy NEVER made any Black Americana wall pockets.
McCoy NEVER made any Disney character wall pockets.
McCoy NEVER made any string holder type wall pockets.
The authentic McCoy Leaves and Berries wall pocket was not marked McCoy. It was unmarked or marked NM.
The authentic McCoy Mail Box wallpocket came in green. While it is possible that a rare one is somewhere in the world, avoid pastel colors being sold.
Just because an item is marked McCoy does not mean it was made at the McCoy Pottery in Roseville, Ohio. Reproduction molds can be made with a McCoy mark leaving shoppers at risk to learn how to tell an authentic piece from a new piece of pottery.
Fake and reproduction wallpockets are rapidly growing in number. Some are reproductions of original McCoy wallpockets but in drastically different colors, such as the common pastels being used on fakes. Others are not and never were McCoy designs.
It holds true that reproductions are smaller than originals. The difficulty with reproduction wall pockets is that they are often more difficult to measure, and because they are typically not a large piece of pottery, the shrinkage is not as noticeable as on a cookie jar. Ten percent shrinkage of a six or seven inch wallpocket means the reproduction is smaller by just over 1/2 inch. That isn't easy to see. Write the sellers and ask questions; ask for the measurements, ask if they know the origin and the age of the wallpocket. Inquire if they have a return policy. Follow eBay guidelines and use feedback.
The good news is that McCoy wallpockets are covered thoroughly in the McCoy reference books, including one dedicated to wallpockets and wall decorations by Craig Nissen. Take advantage of the information available. Along with the reference books, consider subscribing to the McCoy Lovers' NMXpress which covers reproductions along with wonderful McCoy Pottery news and events. You can also email us, McCJS with your questions.
We have collected McCoy for 18 years and are the editors of the McCoy Lovers' NMXpress which is in its twelfth year of publication. We will gladly provide you with any information that might be helpful.
