Fake Trade and Seated dollars have been coming out of China for a long time. The problem is, they do not even use real silver, so the coin is worthless.
Worse than worthless, as it is a crime to knowingly resell it. You are well and truly screwed.
I noticed the auctions where these sellers seems to have scads of valuable old American silver dollars, even many rare dates, going for next to nothing. Typically, these sellers keep their feedback private. Probably have something to hide.
The most accurate way of identifying a fake is by weight. Cheap fakes weigh less than real silver. But you cannot weigh them without buying.
Ask yourself, "Is it too good to be true?" How come the other Ebay'ers are not bidding on these coins?
Even if these were simply silver rounds, with no collectible value, just silver value, they would be worth more. Seems the sellers make their profits by grossly overcharging on shipping.
The sellers pluck the unwary until their ratings are in the toilet, then drop out, and come back with a new ID.
This is deliberate fraud, aided and abetted by EBay.
Ebay should charge them a bond until they reach a certain level of legal sales, then refund it. If they get caught defrauding anyone within the bond period, they forfeit the bond, and the defrauded buyer is paid out of the bond.
But Ebay gets a cut of every sale, fraudulent or not, and gets fat on cheats. Requiring a bond would cut into EBays profits. So you get screwed, while EBay gets rich.
Just say no to fake dollars.
