Folks, I am not a collector of black Americana nor am I an antique dealer, estate auctioneer, etc. BUT, I am a concerned collector of Gingrich Family hierlooms, memorabilia, historical documents, photos, etc.
Once again, a fake poster posing as a representation of Black Americana has reared itself on EBAY. Posing as a museum mounted poster with estimated value of between $200 - $400... it is being auctioned off without any claim of authenticity, original production, etc.
Let me explain further, I am the great-great grandson of HB Gingrich and I was born and raised in Lawn, PA. I am also the family genealogist and very familiar with family business, heirlooms, antiquities, etc. I grew up across the street from the Lawn Stock Yards and have much of its memoranilia. Even more convincing is the fact that no way would my great, great grandfather print a poster featuring a black child to promote his business. Anyone who is familiar with conservative Lebanon County, PA knows what exactly what I'm talking about. So... I am guessing there must be a market for this kind of creative re-creation. I just hope none of you are mislead by anyone regarding its authenticity. This poster is a fake and obviously not worth the paper its printed on. The superimposed image of a black youth does not even "fit" the era that the Lawn Stock Yards existed... 1895-1925 and the image quality is too crisp and colorful for print capabilities.
Its a shame that supposedly reputable dealers are trying to make a quick buck through deception. I would feel differently if the seller would inform potential buyers that this is a "creative" attempt to represent an era of Americana. Then again... the item would not have significant value and probably no buyers.
