The Fables from the Letter People series by Elayne Reiss-Weimann and Rita Friedman was crafted in the late 80's for learning through literature. Every library bound book taught specific social values such as friendship and cooperation, and featured positive character development such as honesty, integrity and creativity.
The books were wonder-filled adventures with Elizabeth Callen's art work on every other page. Each book had it's own cassette, a read-along narration plus a marvelous original song focused on the specific character theme.
The Resource Book that accompanied the Fables provided a means of merging the traditional role of storyteller and teacher. Extended activities for each learning center were provided to further basic Whole Language teaching. A Fables chart was also available that provided a story line summary and character traits taught in each book.
The full set with the 26 Audio Cassettes originally sold for $429, or $245 without the cassettes. Just the cassette set was $215. The resource book by itself originally sold for $15. Individual books sold for $10.50 and Individual Cassettes sold for $9.95. Individual book with matching cassette sold for 18.95.
Cassettes were double sided with the same tracks to make listening in Audio Centers easier. So there were a full 26 cassettes in the set. The original songs were of typical 80's children's song variety. They are still enjoyable by kids today. Not quite as 'groovy' as the original Letter Person song that is also on the cassette. But very entertaining.
The books are currently out of print, but copies are only moderately difficult to achieve. It can often be easier to piece together a set from parts that finding an entire set. Cost can run higher by the piece. Cassettes are a little harder to come by and have often been well used in school settings.
