What is a bypass oil filter?

Every modern engine has what is called a full-flow oil filter. That means that every time the oil goes through the engine, all of it is filtered by the full-flow filter. Full flow filters are good, and every engine should have one. There is one disadvantage to a full-flow filter - this is that if we make the filter too fine (allowing it to filter very small particles), it cannot handle the volume of oil required by the engine. Actually we could make a very fine full flow filter that could handle the volume, but it would have to be VERY large physcially. For this reason most full-flow filters only catch particles 25 microns or so and larger.

A bypass filter on the other hand takes a fraction of the oil used by the engine and passes it through a super-fine filter element. After a relatively short period of time, all of the engine's oil will have been passed through the bypass filter. In the case of the FS-2500, the bypass filter is able to capture 99.63% of particles 2.78 microns and larger in diameter.

Do we need to filter out particles that small?

Yes! The average oil film thickness between loaded components in your engine is between 5 and 20 microns (much smaller than the actual bearing clearance). Now, just imagine what happens when a piece of dirt 21 microns in diameter gets wedged into a bearing with only 21 microns of clearance. According to the SAE , particles as small as four mirons can cause up to 77% of engine wear.

The FS-2500 is very easy to install on your Duramax, Powerstroke, or Cummins engine. Each kit is custom tailored to each individual application, so you just install it - no desgin work required. The benefits, besides decreased engine wear, include extended oil drain intervals. Many owners go up to 30,000 or more miles between oil changes. This results in decreased pressure on both your pocketbook and the environment. The condition of your oil can be verified during the extended drain intervals by sending a sample in for analysis which is relatively inexpensive. The lab will send back a report with a reccomendation regarding how much life the oil has left in it.
