For many people new to quilting, they are often confused by the term Fat Quarter. Fabric is sold by the yard, so if you got one yard of fabric it would 36 inches long by 44inches wide. If you got a half yard it would be 18 inches long by 44 inches wide. If you wanted a quarter of a yard it would be 9 inches long by 44 inches wide. A fat quarter however, is cut 18 inches long by 22 inches wide. This gives the quilter more of a working space that the 9 inch strip. Many quilters love to collect fat quarters because they can get a wonderful variety of fabric and not spend a fortune. You can create a great quilt with 20 or so fat quarters. Many sellers, sell fat quarter bundles and what a great way to build your fabric stash. Jane's Fabrics Store
