Why is it that certain color tops seem to stay in your closet even though you love the style and fabric?  Why does that expensive blouse your Aunt Mary gave you make you feel Yukky every time you wear it?  If it’s a style you like, then the problem might be the color.

Aunt Mary prefers earth tones because they compliment her skin tone and make her feel great. She is an “Autumn”.  When she buys YOU those same colors, they make you feel drab.  Why?  Because your coloring may be more toward the true bright colors of jewels if you are a “Winter”.  Those are the colors that compliment your skin tone and give you a lift when you wear them.  Earth tones just don’t make you feel beautiful.

Many fashion Gurus say you have to wear the color that is “IN” this season.  I don’t agree.  I’m of the persuasion that if a color is not flattering to your skin tone, and if it doesn’t make you feel beautiful, then don’t wear it.  There used to be a saying.  “If it feels good, do it.”   You could make your own similar fashion statement.  “If it feels good, wear it.”  And if it doesn’t feel good, don’t wear it.

Image consultants have developed businesses to help people determine what they should or shouldn’t wear.  They have divided us into 4 main color groups: Spring; Autumn; Summer; & Winter.  When it comes right down to it though, your own intuition will tell you what looks good on you.  Chances are you have certain colors in your wardrobe right now that are your favorites.  When you put on that garment, you feel happy, perky, beautiful, energized. In short “If it feels good, you wear it.”  Even a child has favorite colors and often they are the very colors that will give them energy and make them feel good when they wear them.

Here is the basic breakdown of the 4 main color groupings.

SPRING:   You have clear and bright coloring.  Wear golden shades of olive, brown, camel and green.   When choosing accent colors, look for bright greens and yellows, blue greens, as well as coral and salmon. For blouses, select ivory instead of white (golden shades look best with your coloring).

SUMMER:  You have more delicate skin tone.  Wear calming tones like dusty rose, charcoals, blue-grey, soft browns.  Never dress in vivid colors, look for pastels that create a sense of serenity in you.  Select a top that is color softend like powder blue, dusty pink or ivory.

AUTUMN OR FALL: Your coloring is more toward the warm natural colors of earth.  This time of year, as the green leaves turn to soft yellow, muted orange and golden brown, you will be reminded of the colors that enhance your beauty. You have a little more flexibility in which colors will make you feel wonderful.  You can wear both muted and rich, warm colors like the autumn foliage or exotic spice colors.  Pick colors that make you glow, but avoid bright shades or pure white and black.  These colors will make you look tired and faded.  Pastels do the same.  Stick with warm earthy colors and you will look and feel great.

WINTER:  Your coloring is crisp, vibrant and distinctive.  And I’m not just saying that because that’s my coloring. You look best in rich and intense jewel colors and you easily can wear deep rich colors accented with jewel tones or bright white or even icy pastels, beware of soft pastels though.  Avoid earth tones, or muted colors.  They will make you look washed out and accentuate any wrinkles you have.  Be brave and try something new.  It will give you an energy boost you didn’t think possible from a color.

SHADES OF COLORS ARE IMPORTANT:  According to research, wearing pink makes us feel friendlier and seem more approachable to others.  Which means more smiles from everyone you meet and a nicer day for you.  That may be true, but it is just as important to wear a SHADE of pink that compliments your color.  My daughter, seldom wears pink because she is inclined to wear earth tones and they look fabulous on her. Since she is an "Autumn", pink is not one of her best colors.  On the other hand, earth tones of Autumn make me feel drab and uncomfortable.  I am a Winter.  I love the color blue.  Not baby blue or Navy blue but true blue like the blue on your Microsoft Windows screen.  I seldom wear pink simply because it was hard to find a shade of pink that made me feel good.  All I saw on the rack was soft or muted pastel pinks.  Then I found a lovely top that was more to the rich true pink (toward the blue side).  I wore it to a meeting the other day and immediately got compliments.  They said things like, “That’s your power color, girl.”  Another woman said,  “You should wear more pink.  You just light up when you wear that color.”   Along with your own intuition, if you pay attention to what colors bring compliments from others, you will narrow down your search for “your perfect color scheme”.

Something to think about:  Did you know the color yellow is said to enhance concentration.  That is why it’s used for legal pads.  Hmmm.  Maybe I should wear yellow when writing these Fashion Guides.

Have a Happy Day!
