BEWARE there are sellers out there selling FAKE REPRODUCTIONS of Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jars and items that go with them like salt shakers, creamers, sugars, canisters, spices, banks, and many more items. The original items were made by Hull Pottery. McCoy pottery NEVER made a Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jar or any Little Red Riding Hood items, and for the record, NO Black Littlle Red Riding Hood was ever made. ALL the McCoy Little Red Riding Hood pieces are FAKE. Even if the seller tells you their grandmother had it, don't believe it. Unless their grandmother bought it in the last few years they are telling a big one! Also, there is a BLACK Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jar out there that has also been made by the same guy. Hull never made a Black Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jar and neither did McCoy. The guy that is doing most of the Little Red Riding Hood reproductions is also reproducing Shawnee jars, Brush jars, McCoy jars, and many more. He is crazing or crackling them from top to bottom to make people think they are old. Crazing comes from a jar getting too hot or too cold. The crazing will never be uniform looking from top to bottom. It will be in certain places on the jar, NOT all over. BEWARE! Also, a seller that puts the bidder id as private, may be trying to hide something other than your bidder id. LOOK closely at their FEEDBACK! Most buyers don't put NEGATIVE FEEDBACK unless there is a real problem. If they are saying in their feedback that they received a FAKE item and the seller disagrees everytime. BEWARE. There are sellers that sell only FAKE - REPRODUCTION items, they word their auctions so as to cover themselves! Like saying.....we buy from antique shows, flea markets, yard sales, individuals, auctions, so we don't know how old the items are we sell, we just love to sell. ..... It is this thought process that reels a potential buyer in when they see...Hull Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jar or Hull Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Canister. It makes (on purpose) the buyer think, they might not know what they've got since they are putting it on with NO reserve! When they know exactly what they are doing! They are BAITING you! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! Research items...how tall should they be....what decals are on them (if you haven't seen the decals in any of the cookie jar books or reference books BEWARE...is the artistry good or sloppy...look at the markings on the bottom of the jar, the writing should not look sloppy or uneven, the pottery itself should not have a thick uneven look about it on the bottom, it will be smooth and nice, ask for close up pictures to be sent to you, beware if they don't send them, BEWARE, buy a book, or go to your local antique mall or library and look it up and study it. Your about to bid on an item and pay your hard earned money for it and YOU don't want to get ripped off! There is a lot of info on the internet. Google it and type in Fake Little Red Riding Hood, and read, read, read. A fake LRRH Cookie Canister just recently sold for over $2000.00. This was a new $20.00 item!! So sad! So be ALERT. Don't let this happen to you. And if you buy a fake, let them know it, Complain, Complain. That's what feedback is all about. Also, remember if you look at an item that is being sold that you know or think you know that it is rare...look at the sellers other items for sale, and also what they've sold in the last 30 days, and if they have 1 or 2 identical items. BEWARE! No one is that lucky! It is very very hard to find vintage Hull Little Red Riding Hood items, especially in good shape. Ebay is a wonderful venue for buyers and sellers but as in any business venture there is always going to be individuals that are trying to make money off of someone in a crooked way. So it is up to us to be informed enough to not get cheated.
