I bought some $1 coins from China from 3 sellers on March 27. When I went back to the related guides column under other coins I saw a BEWARE OF "TRADE D. When I opened it up to read what it said I realized I just may have bought some fake coins. I bought 2 Seated Liberty, 2 Trade, and 2 Morgan $1 from these people. I went back and looked at the pics of them and found that the mint marks are fake on 3 of the coins from one seller. The coins were shown as 1843 S & 1856 CC Seated Liberty and an 1873 O Trade Dollar. I looked in my Coin Values magazine and the Red Book to check them all out and found that none of them are listed in either one. I then checked out an auction gallery to see if they had ever offered any of these up for auction and none showed. I went to PCGS coin site and looked for them and found none of them listed. The 1856 CC is definitely a fake because the Carson City mint didn't open until 1870. No mint marks were stamped on the 1843 Seated Liberty and the 1873 O couldn't have been done in New Orleans as the mint was shut down at that time during the Civil war.
I sent an e-mail to e-bay before I discovered the fake mint marks and expressed my concerns about the fake coins and what I had read from other people about the coins from China. I haven't heard anything back but they say to wait for 24 to 48 hours for a reply. In the meantime about 2 hours after I won the bid on one of the auctions, the seller marked the coins as payment received, yet I haven't sent a payment to any of them yet and most likely won't now. I will wait and see what e-bay has to say. I looked at the pics that were posted showing the R on the Morgan $1 that were fake and I think the coins I bought look exactly like them.
Hopefully this may help someone else before they get burned. I could have been out about $300.00 if I hadn't seen the warning by dutch4. Thanks to everyone else who has written about these fake coins. If more people are made aware then maybe this can be stopped.
Thanks,
