Express Delivery envelopes used as ordinery envelopes ?

India post abolished Express Delivery with effect from 1st November,1974. Resulting in surplus stock of un-issued Express Delivery with central stock depots of various postal circles. Director General. Posts and Telegraphs, issued directions to all Heads of postal circles to the express delivery envelope (Postage 15P + Express Delivery Fee 13P) with inland envelope rate of 25p for 20gms, to be sold to public as ordinary envelope

(vide circular No.30-44/74 Phil dated the 9th January, 1975)

Types of envelope overprinted

1. English Test, Thin letters, Postage 15P. + Express Delivery fee 13P.

2. English Test ,Thick letter, Postage 15P. + Express Delivery fee 13P.

3. Bilingual Test (Hindi and English) Square envelope, Postage 20P+ Express Delivery 20P.Pinkwove paper Size 121x97mm.

4. Bilingual Test (Hindi and English ) Commercial size Postage 20P.+ Express delivery 20p. Size 140x92mm

Postal circles starting with Madhya pradesh ( Issued on 14.01.1975 ), other postal circles ,issued these overprinted express delivery envelopes are - Andhra pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Gujrat, Karnataka, Maharastra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Uttar pradesh, and West Bengal.

Madha pradesh postal circle : 25 P overprinted , space between 2 lines different types exist, express delivery oblitering by four lines & five lines.

Utter pradesh postal circle : Issued on Sep/Oct 1975, Black machine obliteration without overprint on embosed stamp. Different types of 'X ' overprint exsit .overprint double ,shifting are common ,but overprinted double one inverted is rare.

Delhi postal circle : 25P on 28p. the legent is scored with two parallel bars & three parallel bars and imprinted stamp is overprinted with "25 Paisa" in small letters. ink variety exist in both types. shifting and letter missing are common, illustrated Albino express delivery overprinted is too rare.

Rajasthan postal circle : Issued on March 1979 Black machine overprint. The floral obliteration of overprint consists of three rows of ten floral units.

Bihar postal circle : Issued on Oct / Nov. 1977 ,( i ) Legend scord with rows "25 paisa " overprinted on stamp. ( ii ) Black machine oblitration. Three row of eight floral units.

Tamil nadu postal circle : Black machine oblitration, legend scored with three diagonal lines second 2 nd illustrated envelope issued on 20.10.1980, 35p. on 40p. The legend is scored with two sets of 3 horizontal lines each of 39 mm. Length in black ink. Embossed stamp is overprinted with " postage : 35P " between two parallel horizontal lines of 15 mm. each in black ink.

Karnataka postal circle : Issued on 21.06.1976, Legend oblitrerated with two thick lines scored out by thin diagonal lines in rectangle., Postage stamps affixed are also scored with two horizontal bars.

Maharashtra postal circle : Blue machine obliteration .two small parallel lines printed above imprinted stamps and " TWENTY FIVE PAISA " printed in the middle "25 " below the imprinted stamp.

Punjab postal circle : Red machine obliteration 25p on 28p embossed stamp is overprinted with "25p ""twenty" ,and "Paisa" in four rows.

Andhra pradesh postal circle : ( i ) Red machine obliteration with solid rectangular block scoring the legent and shaped bar with " 25 " overprinted on imprinted stamp. ( ii ) The legend is scored with five wavy horizontal lines embossed stamp is overprinted with numeral "35 " and " Paisa ".

West Bengal postal circle : The legend is scored with uneven sided rectangle and embossed stamp is overprinted with " 35 Paisa"

Delhi postal circle : The legend is scored with swastikes in three rows. Embossed stamp is overprinted numeral "30" and "PAISE"

Madhya pradesh postal circle : The legend is scored with three pairs of two thin horizontal lines. 35 paisa is wrong spelling printed in Hindi " 35 pais "
