People often grumble at the price of a replacement toilet tank lid and vow to simply replace the whole toilet. If you are a good handyman and dont mind spending an afternoon (or day) doing this it might not be too bad, but CONSIDER these things FIRST:

Many cities require a building permit.

Even a Depot Cheapo toilet is going to cost over $100. Most good ones are about $300 and the designer ones $700-$1,000 or more. Good toilets are heavy. Dont drop or chip the new one and be careful of your back. They are awkward to handle. Hiring a plumber to do everything will likely cost $500 or more.

New toilets are now 1.6 gallons per flush. Unless you live on a hill, do you really think a gallon of water is going to move that waste from your bathroom way out to the main line in the street? My neighbor keeps Roto Tooter in business with their 1.6 gpf. If you have to flush 3-4 times you really haven't saved much water. Many 1.6 gpf toilets are quite noisy if they have a pressure tank.

Skip this paragraph if you just ate: Compared to older toilets, there is not much water in newer bowls. Your "butt aim" needs to be pretty good or you will need to clean off those annoying "skid marks" with a toilet bowl brush. Dont you just hate doing #2 at someones new house and not knowing where they keep their bowl brush?

The angle stop behind the toilet to the supply line is probably frozen open. Out to the water meter to shut off the water. Out here the city water meter box usually has a hundred cockroaches and at least one Black Widow spider inside. Back to the Depot for a new shut off valve. While you're there get a new wax ring.

The toilet's "footprint" on the tile will likely be different. Call out the tile and flooring guy to fix that. That makes 2 butt cracks to have avoided looking at. First the plumbers and now the tile guys!

Go to neighbors house to use their bathroom since your water has been shut off for hours during the R & R.

Paint the bathroom wall behind the toilet since the new tanks are shorter and you can now see the 7 colors that the bathroom had been painted in the past. Might as well paint the whole bathroom now.

Figure out how to get the old toilet into a trash can. Or out to the curb on Trash Day.

Just think, all this could have been avoided by simply putting a replacement LID on your tank. It takes just a few minutes to unpack it and gently set it on top of your tank!
