Please, BUYER BEWARE. You may think that unscrupulous sellers are able to sell 12 MegaPixel (MP) cameras for under $200 because the cameras are generic or otherwise not mainstream. Please beware. They would LOVE for you to believe that. However, what they are selling is usually a 3-5 MegaPixel camera. If there were a 12 MP camera out today, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc would be selling it. The reason that these con-artists believe that they can advertise that way is the following:
So, let's say you take a picture in 3 megapixel mode. Then they want you to upload it onto your computer and run "enhancement" or interpolation software on it. Sure, that will make it slightly bigger (as taking a picture in 5 MP would be bigger (with more pixels and higher file size), but the quality will be very poor. This is called software enhancement. Anyone can do that with any camera. You are better off buying a name-brand camera for the same price, regardless of the difference in MP. Some of these sellers don't even list the exact megapixel rating and it's really ticking me off. That's why I spent my valuable time writing this guide in hopes that you don't get screwed out of your money. I could take an 8 megapixel camera and use some crappy interpolating software to make my picture look the size of about a 25MP picture or so. But you wouldn't see me trying to hawk it that way and make $1000 on a $350 camera.
Furthermore, if you are getting a screaming deal on your purchase (Saving $100+ over what you might normally pay at a store or from a different seller), the item might be hot (a.k.a. stolen) or black/gray market. You might be able to get technical support, but you WILL NOT get any warranty coverage from the manufacturer if you buy one of these.
Good luck out there... John
