I can tell that my last article has challenged many of you. Hey, it's not called 'Everything You've Been Told About Exercise Might Be RIGHT'!
This ongoing series is meant to challenge traditional views that are obviously incorrect, but for some reason have been passed along for years as the truth.
When people meet me, they can tell I'm in great shape. I have lots of energy and look about eight years younger than I really am. The truth is I am married, have two daughters and I still get asked for ID if I go to a restaurant.
So when they find out I'm a fitness coach, their first question is always about my workouts. They want to know what I do. How do I get into top shape? What exactly does a fitness coach do for himself?
My answer always surprises them. I tell them about my really short intense workouts using either dumbbells, bodyweight or other fun 'playground' equipment. And these workouts never last longer than a grand total of 20 minutes.
And 99 times out of 100 the follow-up question is, "What about cardio?"
You should see their jaws drop when I tell them I haven't done an ounce of traditional 'cardio' in at least five years. They think I'm lying.
It's so ingrained in our brains you must do cardio to burn fat, it's really hard for people to grasp you can get even more fit WITHOUT cardio.
So here's my challenge for you this week. If you do cardio, try to take two weeks off from it and instead try to do some 'interval' training.
It can be something as simple as going to the track and sprinting the straight-aways then walking/recovering on the turns. Or better yet, after the sprint try a bodyweight strength exercise like 10 push-ups, then walk, then do another sprint. Just give it a shot for 10 minutes or so.
I'm looking forward to seeing your results.
Stay tuned for the next part in my ongoing series.
