The kind of equipment you will need to purchase for making dyes will depend on you. I've learned that you can dye many pounds of fiber using utensils around your home. However none of these items should ever be used again when preparing to cook food. So use old pots and pans or by new ones to use for just dyeing.
Equipment List:
- Enamel canning pot, with lid. This is because these same pots are used for mordanting and dyeing, you will want a size that will hold 8 canning jars in the rack.
- Plastic ice cream containers, a 1-gallon or 4 litre size, or even a plastic bucket (for soaking out dyestuffs and holding strained-off dye liquor), will do.
- Wooden stick, dowel or a piece of driftwood for stirring.
- Cheesecloth, old nylons, or plastic colander to strain off the dyestuff after it has been cooked out.
- Plastic measuring spoons and glass measuring cup (the old style, 32 ounce size, or new type, 1-litre size that holds 35.2 fluid ounces)
- Rubber gloves, (these need to be as heavy as possible)
- Old newspaper, rags, and clean-up supplies
- The dyestuff that you've collected, several gallons of rain or tap water; one or more of the following household mordants: Baking soda, Common Salt, Drugstore Alum, Urine, Vinegar, or Cream of Tartar.
