Empire Liquidators is the cause of my first truely bad experience on EBay. I purchased a Yakima Megajoe Bike Rack from Empire Liquidators. The item description was completely false and misleading. At first glance the rack out of the box appeared in good condition. However, upon detailed inspection I could clearly see that things were not as they appeared and not as they were described in the posting. Here are 5 bullet points highlighting my bad experience. Please read each one carefully.

  • The item was listed as NEW OR UNUSED CONDITION. This clearly was not that case. It was clear that the bike rack had been used for sometime.
  • The item description stated that that all the securing hooks were inspected and in working condition. Upon my inspection I could see that one of the securing hooks was missing. Let me explain. The rack is secured to the car by 6 anchor points, 2 on top, 2 on the side, and 2 on the bottom of the trunk or hatch. The side and bottom strap are on one single adjustable fastening line. The stitching that holds on one of the anchoring hooks was torn and the hook was missing. This missing hook renders the rack useless because the side and bottom hook create tension which prevents the rack from leaving vehicle while moving. If a bike were to be loaded on the rack it would loosen and could potential hurt or damage other motorist, not to mention damage to the bike.
  • I contacted their Customer Service Dept via email. I received automated email responses in return.  All the emails were identical and requested that I contact the warehouse via toll call during their business hours. I did this on multiple occasions. Each time I spoke with someone in the warehouse and I was told that he would not be able to assist me. Each time I was then transferred to a voicemailbox for someone in Personnel Operations. I left multiple voicemails, all of which went unreturned.
  • I ultimately was forced to call Yakima directly and order replacement parts. The cost of the parts and the additional shipping made the bike rack more expensive than if I had just gone to Dicks Sporting Goods and purchased a new one, this also includes the 10.5% tax I would have paid.
  • No communication. Empire Liquidators never contacted me with  tracking information. I did not receive a tracking number until after the item I had already arrived.
