Considering an electric powered R/C boat? There are lots of cheap electric boats out there-most are recent Chinese imports. These may be suitable for beginners as they have limited power, range, and maneuverability. You will see that most use the "vector push" system for steering-this means a device increases or decreases the speed of each motor to steer the boat. That is why they have dual motors=not necessarily for speed but for steering purposes. These boats may even have a rudder but it serves no purpose other than looks. The vector push design is not nearly as effective as a real servo powered rudder as seen on better quality boats. It is cheaper for the manufacturer to use a combination receiver/motor controller than to use a separate receiver/servo controlled rudder system.A separate rudder/speed control system will be faster and more maneuverable. These boats do function - until something goes bad in the "mystery" box that all the wires are connected to.When that happens, good luck getting it fixed! With a quality boat you can always replace a bad component like a bad servo or speed control instead of trying to find another "mystery box" from a Chinese importer! Of course, some of these boats are so cheap you could just buy another one and hope that it lasts longer than the first one! These "toy" boats are OK for kids [who will soon lose interest anyway] but a quality hobby grade boat will give you much more satisfaction in the long run.A quality boat will steer better, run faster, and last longer as long as you take care of it.
